Though I have never been in a serious automobile accident, I have been in one that may have been serious had things been just a little bit different. I can't say I was any better. Though I didn't drive, I did ride along with those who had done so. I was not what you might call a dim person either. Teenagers know the risks of an auto collision but they just don't believe it can happen to them. I just never thought I was in danger, and I was blessed that the only auto crash I was in was very minor, and equally blessed in that nobody got hurt. Icy highways were to blame for that crash, and thankfully no-one had been drinking.

If you worry about your kids being involved in an auto crash, you have a right to worry. The smartest teens on the planet make some poor choices. That's all a part of growing up. You need to warn them of the risks of drinking and being in a vehicle, and you have to let them know that an automobile accident can happen at any time. This may not be enough though, and that means you have to make sure you know where your kids are and what they are doing at all times. This may mean making them stay home when their buddies are out. They may say they dislike you for it, but it's all part of being a great parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad child to a dead kid.
